HC directs for release of financial assistance to advocates

Srinagar, June 29: High Court today directed the Registrar General of the court to expedite the release of financial assistance to deserving lawyers as the amount has been sanctioned by the Government for them on account of lockdown imposed due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The direction followed after the court was informed that the lieutenant Governor of J&K has sanctioned Rs one Crore as financial assistance in favour of Advocates working in different court of J&K UT out of relief fund. In this regard communication has been produced before the court which was addressed to Registrar General by the Additional Secretary to Government.
“The Registrar General, J&K High Court shall expedite the matter for release of amount in favour of the deserving lawyers, who have already applied, so as to ensure their timely help and assistance”, Justice Magrey directed.
A Practicing lawyer Abu Bakr Pandit has approached the court by way of a writ petition seeking direction on Commissioner Secretary Law Department and Secretary Law Department to grant immediate financial aid to each lawyer practicing in J&K.
Court on previous hearing had directed that the Government to come up with clear stand qua release of amount as financial aid to the lawyers on the patterns of already issued guidelines in the previous financial year, when similar type of lockdown/ restrictions were imposed on account of Covid-19 Pandemic.
The petitioner is seeking immediate financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 25,000 to each advocate who have earlier received the financial assistance and are in actual practice within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir
He also seeks formulate a medical and life insurance policy for the welfare of the advocates and their family members practicing before the High Court and District Court(s) within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Registrar General of the court on April 28 last year had issued an order wherein the applications were invited from advocates enrolled with J&K State Bar Council, who are in dire need of financial assistance because of grave financial hardship on account of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for consideration for payment of financial assistance.
