HC bans use of antibiotics in poultries

SRINAGAR, June 4: The High Court today directed the concerned authorities to constantly check the poultry farms and ensure complete ban on use of antibiotics in the poultries.
Disposing of an application wherein it was alleged that antibiotics is used in poultry forms without following any procedure, the Division bench of Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice MK Hanjura today directed the concerned Administrative Departments of the State Government to have a constant check and monitor on the poultry farms, so that the poultry is reared in hygienic environment and ensure
complete ban on the use of antibiotics like nalidixic acid and ciprofloxin or any other harmful ingredients in any poultry.
Court directed for filing of compliance report in this regard before the Registry on or before the next date of hearing in the main petition and disposed of the application accordingly.
The said application was mainly filed for implementation of the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. When the matter was taken up today, Advocate General fairly submitted that the State is under an obligation to ensure the implementation of the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and further added that the State Government shall take all positive steps to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the Act.
With these submission made by AG, the DB directed that the State Government and its officers shall follow the mandate of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 as prescribed in Section 18 of the Act.
Court further directed the concerned Administrative Departments of the State Government to ensure that the regular inspection of bakers shall be undertaken, and to take samples in order to check the ingredients used by them and not to allow them to sell pastry, cakes and loose biscuits without manufacturing and expiry date.
“That all the local bakers/ kandur shall be brought under the ambit of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and their activities shall be checked and sufficient steps shall be taken to ensure proper storage and sale, and to ensure safe and wholesome bakery/ roti for human consumption and other norms applicable to them under Food Safety and Standards Act”, read one of the directions made in the order of Division Bench.
