MOSCOW, Dec 26: In 2018, hackers attacked almost half of Russia’s biggest regional companies, with 75 percent of incidents accounting for oil and gas industry, a report prepared by Moscow-based international cybersecurity company Positive Technologies said.
The report is based on information provided by the heads of IT departments of 192 large regional companies from Russia’s Volga, Ural, Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts. According to the Positive Technologies, 82 percent of interviewed companies have been subject to cyberattacks, with 47 percent of respondents having reported successful intrusions.
The majority of incidents were registered in oil and gas industry (75 percent), with industrial enterprises and state financial organizations also being hackers’ frequent target. At least 32 percent of companies suffered financial losses due to cyberattacks, while the infrastructure of every fourth company was paralyzed by corporate system compromise in 2018, the report added.
The intruders in their attacks most frequently used malwares, in particular ransomwares, and phishing emails. Meanwhile, only 4 percent of the companies were subject to targeted attacks. The report’s authors also drew attention to the Russian companies’ low spending on information security.
Positive Technologies, established in 2002, is an international company, providing a wide range of enterprise security solutions.
