POONCH, Feb 12: Shamsher Hakla Poonchi a prominent Gujajr leader and intellectual of the State today made an appeal to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to give reservation to Gujjars in State legislature.
In a statement issued here today Hakla said that the Gujjar and Bakerwal community deserve political reservations as they have been given the Schedule Tribe Status by Government of India 25 years back. The community is still socially politically and economically backward, he added.
Recalling the role of community in defending the national unity and integrity, Hakla said whether it was tribal invasion in 1947, 1965 and 1971 Indo Pak war or the proxy war started by Pakistan since 1989 Gujjars were always on forefront to defend the nation.
He said during 1989-90 militancy the Gujjars played  heroic deeds and took on against the militants and many people of the community laid down their lives for the nation.
Maintaining that Gujjars are patriots by core he said they have played a great role in countering proxy war and crushing the militancy.
