POONCH, June 21: Expressing serious concern over the plight of Gujjar and Bakerwal community in the State prominent Gujjar leader Shamsher Hakla Poonchi has appealed the Government to settle the long pending demands of the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals who have rendered a yeoman’s service to the nation as well State.
In a statement issued her today, Hakla said the Gujjars are still deprived of basic amenities of life and are backward. No proper steps have been taken for providing education facilities in Gujjar bastis in far-flung areas with the result the literacy rate of the community is very low.
While expressing concern over the Government’s silence on reservations to the SCs,STs and OBCs in promotions, the Gujjar leader said this step was taken to uplift these communities and bring them at par with other well to do communities in the society. By depriving them of the promotions in government services means retarding their progress which amounts to social injustice.
He made an appeal to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seeking her intervention in the matter. Hakla said for building a strong society and nation, upliftment of every section of society is must so that there is no feeling of neglect by any community.
