Srinagar, Apr 16: A worker was killed and several others were injured after a portion of an under-construction cold storage unit collapsed in Lassipora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district as gusty winds lashed Kashmir causing widespread damage.
The gusty winds led to the collapse of the truss of the under-construction structure in Lassipora, resulting in injuries to five persons at the site.
All the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where one of them succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Sajad Ahmad Mir, a resident of Ruhama, Rafiabad. The injured include Jaspreet Singh of Amritsar, Aijaz Kumar and Hilal Ahmad Rather of Budgam, and Naseer Ahmad Mir of Baramulla.
The gusty winds across Kashmir in the afternoon blew away rooftops and electricity poles and damaged other infrastructure.
Minor disruptions to power supply in some areas following the strong winds leading to power outages.
The Meteorological Department in Srinagar today forecast generally cloudy conditions with intermittent spells of light rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir till April 19, with a possibility of gusty winds and hailstorms at isolated places.
An official of the MeT said that from April 17 to 19, the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy, with intermittent spells of light rain and thundershowers at many places, particularly during morning and late evening hours.
He also warned of gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph and the possibility of hailstorms at a few locations during this period.
The weather is expected to improve from April 20 to 24, with generally dry conditions likely to prevail across the Union Territory.
Similar conditions are forecast for April 25 and 26, although brief spells of light rain or thundershower with gusty winds may occur at isolated places towards the afternoon.
The MeT has issued an advisory asking farmers to suspend farm operations from April 17 to 19 in view of the expected weather activity, including rain, gusty winds and possible hailstorms.
An official said the advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to minimise potential damage to crops and ensure safety during adverse weather conditions.
The department has urged people to remain cautious, especially during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms, and to follow official advisories.
