JAMMU, Aug 20: A Gurmat Samagam in the memory of Sant Bhai Mela Singh Ji was organized at Gurdwara Yadgar Sant Mela Singh Ji, Sant Rocha Singh Pura, Batote, under the supervision of Mahant Manjeet Singh Ji of Shiromani Dera Nangali Sahib, Poonch.
A large number of people barring caste and creed participated in the Samagam in which Ragi Jathas and Parcharaks from Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir recited Shabad Kirtan. Dhadi Jatha of S Trilochan Singh of Slimpura Punjab and S Sarwan Singh Sewak also from Punjab, participated and recited Shabad and Katha of Guru Sahib. They also threw light on the life of Sant Bhai Mela Singh Ji and they were all praise of Dera Nangali Sahib.
Mahant Manjeet Singh while addressing laid stress upon youth to become Amritdharis and shun all bad habits in order to follow the path of truth and teachings of Gurus so as to become good citizens to promote the community as well as the country besides going in for higher education in the institutions formed by Dera Nangali Sahib. All Sikh organizations which participated in the Samagam were presented Sirpoas.
Other Sikh organizations which participated included Bhai Kanyia Nishkam Sewa Society, Shiromani Youth Akali Dal, AISSF, Sikh Naujawan Sabha and Sikh Welfare Society. Demands raised in the Samagam pertained to teaching of Punjabi in Government schools, raising of Sikh Minority Commission, induction of a Sikh Minister in the Cabinet, one Sikh judge in J&K High Court, one Sikh member in Public Service Commission as also in SSRB. Tehsil status for Batote was also demanded. Rehabilitation and permanent settlement of refugees of 1947 from PoK was also demanded and the Chief Minister urged to intervene for speedy disposal of demands.
Prominent participants included S Mohinder Singh, S Narbir Singh, S Paramjeet Singh, S Kulwant Singh, S Satinder Pal Singh Sethi, S Joginder Singh Inqalabi, S Gajan Singh, S Davinder Singh Bhargav, S TP Singh, S Kultar Singh etc.
