Gulmarg, Ladakh receive fresh snowfall

SRINAGAR :  The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg  and all other heights in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region experienced fresh snowfall while plains had rains, resulting in drop in the day temperature.
However, barring Gulmarg and Kupwara, the minimum  temperature in the Kashmir valley remained above normal, due to cloudy sky, a Met department spokesman said here today.
It was snowing and the world famous ski slopes are under about
three inches of snow, a hotel owner told UNI over phone from Gulmarg.
He said the upper reaches, including Affarwat, the highest ski point connected with Cable Car, Kongdori and Khilanmarg received moderate to heavy snowfall since early this morning.
The minimum temperature again dropped to minus o.7, about  two notches below normal due to icy cold winds in the ski resort.
All heights, including the areas near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir also received light to moderate snowfall, resulting in cold.
At frontier district of Kupwara, the minimum temperature was 2 degree, a degree blow normal due to fresh snowfall and rains in the plains in north Kashmir.
In south Kashmir, the holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery also received moderate to heavy snowfall since last night. Reports of snowfall were also received from Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top, Panjterni, official sources said.
However, Pahalgam, a famed health resort had 4.6 mm  rainfall and the sky was heavily cloudy.
Met spokesman said the minimum temperature at Pahalgam was 2.8 degree, two degree above normal.
In Srinagar, the capital city received rains last night  and early this morning. However, the minimum temperature was 6.7 degree, about four degree above normal.
The day remained cold as sun was behind the clouds since this morning.
Met spokesman said Srinagar recorded 3.1 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
In the Ladakh region, Drass, the second coldest place in  the world after Siberia and nearby border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway received fresh snowfall. However, the upper reaches had moderate to heavy snowfall.
Sonamarg and Baltal, base camp of holy Amarnath cave, also received fresh snowfall.
The Met department has predicted more snowfall and rains  in the region during the next 24 hours.
