JAMMU, Feb 4: A delegation of Gujjar community, led by Dr Javaid Rahi, today met PCC president Prof Saif -ud -Din Soz and sought support of his party for inclusion of Gojri in 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution.
A memorandum supported by an eight-page document about Gojri language, prepared by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, was submitted to Prof Soz.
Dr Javaid Rahi apprised Prof Soz that Gojri has recently been recommended by State Government for inclusion in Indian Constitution. Adding that the case is pending with Union Home Ministry, Dr Rahi sought the help of PCC chief to expedite the matter.
The memorandum submitted to Prof Soz reads that Gojri is one of the oldest and significant languages in the South Asian sub continent, spoken by Gujjar tribe and other groups in twelve Northwestern States of India and thus has a locus standi for its inclusion in the 8th Schedule.
The memorandum further reads that Gojri has a strong literary tradition and has been recognized as a tribal language of India by the National Academy of Letters viz ‘Sahitya Academy’ besides J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
Prof. Soz assured the delegation that Congress will support the demand of Gujjar community for inclusion of Gojri in the eighth Schedule. He assured to take up this matter with Union Home Minister shortly.
The delegation comprised of Dr Rashid Chowdhary, Shah Nawaz, Mehmmood Chowdhary, Parvaiz A Chowdhary, A H Chouhan, Ab Razaq Poswal and others.
