JAMMU, Feb 9: Demanding establishment of full-fledged department of Gojri in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri -the members of Gujjar Bakerwal tribes- today pleaded that a good number of students are interested to opt for Gojri as one of the subject at Post-graduation level but courses are not available for them.
In a programme organised by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, the community members urged Prof Javed Masarat , Vice Chancellor, BGSBU, to intervene in the matter and issue necessary direction in this regard.
The programme was presided over by noted Gujjar Scholar Dr Javaid Rahi while a large number of community members, elders and community youth participated.
Dr Javaid Rahi, in his presidential address, stated that after a long wait the BGSB University has recently introduced Gojri with 6 month course at Post-graduate level – under ‘Choice Based Credit System’ but community deserves a full fledged Department of Gojri as 60 percent population of the area where University exists speaks Gojri as mother tongue and rest use it as second language. He however, thanked the VC , BGSB University for introducing six month courses for PG student in Gojri.
He said presently more than one thousand books are available in Gojri in J&K and adjoining States. He expressed high hopes and impressed upon BGSBU authorities to start PG Gojri in keeping in view its larger catchment area spread over 12 States.
The speakers , on the occasion stated that with introduction of Gojri in BGSB University a new horizon has now opened for development of Gojri especially in the field of research and documentations which is undoubtedly a good omen for Gujjar community at large. They stated that students are taking Gojri with great enthusiasm . They made an appeal to Vice Chancellor, to convert the Gojri courses into a full-fledged department.
The participants also urged University authorities to start Gojri PG from upcoming Academic session. The other issues related to Gojri language and culture were also discussed on the occasion.
Ch Ishtiaq Ahmad Misbah, Mehmood Riaz , Shafeeq Choudhary, Bilal Rashid Choudhary, Mudassar Choudhary, Ishfaq Chowdhary , Shahid Ayoob, Abaid-ur-Rehman and others also highlighted the demands related to Gojri and discussed issues regarding Gojri language and culture.
