JAMMU, July 5: National Conference today said that the decision of GST Council to impose on budget hotel rooms will destroy the tourism sector.
Former minister and zonal president (Jammu, Samba & Kathua) Babu Rampaul criticized the decisions taken by GST Council in its recently held meeting and maintained that common people and small traders have been further burdened under the new slab of taxes.
He was speaking during a meeting organized by the Party’s coordination committee Jammu district (Urban), central zone at Bahu Fort. Rampaul said that GST Council has approved imposing GST on new items and increasing the tax on a few items, in a bid to boost the Government’s revenue but the common man who is already reeling under the unprecedented inflation rate has been further burdened with taxes.
“The council has decided to impose a 12% GST on hotel rooms below Rs 1000. So far, a 12% GST was imposed on hotel tariffs above Rs 1000. The move will negatively impact the tourism sector which is currently making a recovery from Covid-19 woes,” he said while citing an instance.
The GST will be levied on fees charged by banks for the issue of cheques which will make banking costly for all the people, he said and added that pre-packed and labelled food items like meat, fish, curd, and paneer will now attract GST.
Maintained that the Centre Government has made lives of poor people miserable by imposing hefty taxes on almost all the items of daily use, he appealed the Modi Government to abolish GST on the services rendered by the poor artisans and items of daily use. He also called for strengthening the Indian economy.
