JAMMU, Feb 22: Padma Shri awardee and former Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Chander Prakash Vohra, a distinguished son of the soil, passed away in the United States on February 19.
He was a renowned geologist and an eminent expert in glaciology, widely respected for his immense contribution to earth sciences and polar research.
Vohra had the rare distinction of being among the select Indians to scale Mount Everest and also participate in expeditions to Antarctica, reflecting his spirit of adventure and scientific commitment. Known for his visionary outlook, calm demeanour and administrative acumen, he successfully led the GSI and played a key role in advancing geological and environmental studies in the country.
A rare blend of scientific excellence and leadership, Vohra earned admiration in academic and administrative circles alike. He is survived by his two sons, both settled in the United States.
