JAMMU, Oct 16: Geological Society of India (GSI), Bangalore at it annual general body meeting in Hyderabad conferred the prestigious SM Naqvi Gold Medal Award on Prof GM Bhat of Geology Department, University of Jammu.
The award was presented to Prof Bhat for his outstanding contribution in shedding new light on the evolution of Permian-Triassic sequence across the mass extinction event units and associated Panjal Traps of Kashmir identifying the geochemical and palaeontological signatures within these rocks and physical processes that shaped them through time and space.
He identified breaks in the faunal elements across the P-T boundary transition coinciding with carbon isotope shifting. He for the first time reported and for the first time reported seismites and tsunamites at the Permain- Triassic Bounsaryin Guryul Ravine (Kashmir) possible cause of mass extinction.
Dr Bhat has also embarked on the identification and development of indigenous hydrocarbon resources both conventional and unconventional. He has also undertaken the exploration for alternate energy resources, geothermal in particular.
Prof Bhat has been working with renowned international workers like Prof M Brookfield, Ontario University, Canada, Dr Aymon Bond, Prof Zhong Qiang-Chen, Prof G Shellnut and Prof Kunio Kaiho
Prof Bhat has been instrumental in declaring two Permian–Triassic sections namely Guryul Ravine and Barus in Kashmir as the protected fossil sites by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
