Govt weighs viability of comprehensive scheme for knitwear

NEW DELHI:  The textiles ministry today said it is examining the feasibility of formulating a comprehensive scheme for the country’s knitwear sector, which is grappling with financial stress due to lack of automation leading to lower productivity.

“The feasibility of formulating a comprehensive scheme for the development and support of knitting and knitwear clusters in the country is under examination,” Minister of State for Textiles Ajay Tamta said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

In May, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani had said the government plans to unveil a “big package for the knitwear industry, which is facing several challenges, in the next one month or so”. (AGENCIES)
