Govt sets up two Panels on polls

JAMMU, Sept 7: The Government today constituted two separate Committees to ensure smooth inter-departmental coordination to facilitate conduct of elections to Municipal bodies and Panchayats.
The Committee set up for Urban Local Bodies will be headed by the Financial Commissioner, Housing and Urban Development Departm-ent as the Chairman.
It will have five members including one representative each of the Home Department, Finance Department, General Administration Department and Information Department, all of whom will not be below the rank of Additional Secretary and representative of Police Headquarters not below the rank of Inspector General of Police.
The Committee on Panchayat elections will be headed by the Secretary to Government, Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj as chairperson.
It too will have five members including one representative each of Home Department, Finance Department, General Administration Department and Information Department, all of whom will not be below the rank of Additional Secretary and representative of Police Headquarters not below the rank of Inspector General of Police.
“The Committees may co-opt any other member or members during its deliberations. The Committee on Municipal elections will be serviced by the Housing and Urban Development Department while the Panel and Panchayat polls will be serviced by the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department.
