SRINAGAR, Oct 10: The J&K Government has pruned 307 House Surgeon posts while creating 121 Senior Resident and Tutor positions in the Government Medical Colleges of Srinagar and Jammu, triggering criticism from medical students.
According to an order issued by the Health and Medical Education (H&ME) Department, 54 Senior Resident/Tutor posts have been created in GMC Srinagar by reducing 137 House Physician/House Surgeon positions.
Similarly, as per the order, 67 such posts have been created in GMC Jammu by abolishing 170 posts.
The order, issued by the Secretary of Health and Medical Education, follows the decision of the Council of Ministers dated September 23, 2025.
However, the move has drawn strong criticism from medical students and the medical fraternity.
The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) termed the decision “unfair,” stating that it results in a net loss of 186 posts.
“The Government has cut 307 House Physician posts to create 121 Senior Resident posts – a net loss of 186 jobs. This kills MBBS job opportunities,” AIMSA said, urging the administration to review the decision.
Doctors from both GMCs have also voiced concern over the move.
“One of the toughest times for medicos,” said a doctor from GMC Srinagar, adding that reducing Junior Resident and House Surgeon posts would severely impact fresh graduates.
Another doctor from GMC Srinagar noted: “Reduction of House Surgeon jobs are alarming signs. This isn’t reform; it’s erosion of public employment and the dignity of work.”
A GMC Jammu doctor echoed similar concerns, saying, “Bad news for MBBS graduates in J&K. Fresh doctors already face limited opportunities – now even those are shrinking.”
