Govt not interested in making 221 AUs functional

JAMMU, Jan 10: Making operational 221 Administrative Units (AUs), which were created on the recommendations of an expert committee constituted by the previous National Conference-Congress Govern-ment, is least priority for the present PDP-BJP Coalition Government.
This can be gauged from the reply furnished by the Minister Incharge Revenue in the Legislative Assembly in response to the question of National Conference MLA Abdul Majeed Bhat (Larmi), who wanted to know whether the Government has any intention to make 221 Administrative units functional.
“The matter regarding operationalization of new administrative units created vide Government Order No.REV(S) 242 of 2014 dated October 21, 2014, on the recommendations of the expert committee headed by Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, is under consideration”, the Minister said.
He further said, “the operationalization of these units is subject to creation of adequate manpower and infrastructure, which is further subject to availability of sufficient financial resources”.
The expert committee had recommended creation of 9 new Sub-Divisions, 50 Tehsils, 99 Niabats and 63 CD blocks based on the public demand, sense of exclusion and feasibility of creating new administrative units in the areas which had been left out by the Cabinet Sub-Committee.
It is pertinent to mention here that on the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee 135 Tehsils, 46 Sub-Divisions, 301 Niabats and 177 CD blocks were created by the previous dispensation in the State.
Even during the previous Budget Sessions the Government had given similar reply when asked about the time-frame for making 221 Administrative Units operational. From the same reply furnished today, the Government has made it amply clear that it is not interested in making operational the Administrative Units created on the recommendations of Khurshid Ganai Committee.
It is a matter of concern that even after admitting that recommendations were based on the public demand the present dispensation has not initiated any step to make 221 Administrative Units operational thereby ignoring the aspirations of the people.
