JAMMU, June 30: While refuting the claims of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that no one sleeps hungry in the country during his address to the nation today, former minister and JKPCC vice president Mula Ram and DCC Rural chief, Hari Singh Chib said that still people are facing hardships in arranging two times meals due to hollow policies of the Modi Government.
In a joint press statement issued here today, Congress leaders said that the marginalised and vulnerable sections of J&K are in extremely dire straits. “Lakhs of people belonging to the BPL and weaker section of society are living in pathetic conditions. Their families are on the verge of starvation. Many households are becoming more and more indebted to meet their daily needs. There is scarcity of essential items and the prices have sky-rocketed,” they added.
The Cong leaders said that there are thousands of poor people belonging to the BPL but it’s unfortunate that they could not get their names registered in the ration card due to height of corruption. They asked the BJP Government at the Centre to provide at least Rs 8,000 as monthly cash assistance to the lower and middle class families along with minimum 40 kg ration per family for the next six months or till the corona crisis is over.
“Union Government must plan to give unemployment benefits to a section of organized workers who have lost their jobs due to the Coronavirus pandemic,” they added.
Congress leaders further raised serious concern over the woes of poor labourers, daily wagers and people belonging to the BPL. They said ration is not being distributed in many areas of J&K, although there are massive food grain stocks in Govt godowns. There are complaints of over-charging on essential commodities in which poor people are becoming the worst victims. They sought urgent steps to control the prices of all essential commodities.
