Govt mulling comprehensive policy for welfare of nomads: Zulfkar

JAMMU, Apr 22: Government is mulling a comprehensive policy for settlement of landless nomads as they too are an integral part of the society.
This was stated by the Minister for CA&PD, Choudhary Zulfkar Ali, while chairing a high level meeting to discuss modalities for putting in place an innovative policy for welfare and development of tribal population.
Zulfkar directed Divisional Commissioner Jammu to seek details, within one month, from concerned DCs regarding the strength of landless nomads besides status of facilities they are being provided at present. “This would help explore possibilities for establishment of colonies for nomadic population”, he added.
The Minister asked the Secretary CA&PD to consider identity document of nomads for ration supply to them on regular basis as per their requirement. He also directed the Secretary Social Welfare Department to provide the details of Anganwari Centres being established for nomads.
The Minister asked Chief Conservator Forests to let the nomads reside in the areas where they are putting up since long till the new policy is formulated. He also asked them to keep a strict check on fresh encroachments in forest areas.
He asked the Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department to ensure mobile veterinary services for these people throughout the year including their migratory periods.
“In present era of globalization there is greater need of ensuring education and other basic facilities to tribals for which the present Government is working seriously”, the Minister maintained.
The meeting stressed the need of putting in place a legislation envisaging settlement and socio-economic emancipation of nomads. Besides, the need for evolving a coordinated approach for the welfare of under privileged sections of the society.
Among others present were Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Gazanffer Hussain, Secretary Social Welfare Department, Sanjeev Verma, Chief Conservator Forests, ADDC, Jammu, Special Secretary Sheep Husbandry and other senior officers.
