Governor calls for proposal to provide relief to firing victims

JAMMU, Jan 13: Governor NN Vohra will hold high level review of security situation especially the border tensions and issues of the migrants with top brass of civil and police administration early next week even as he today directed the Home Department to prepare well considered proposals for providing relief to the border migrants in consultations with the concerned Deputy Commissioners.
Official sources said the Government passed on directions to Principal Secretary Home Suresh Kumar, who called on the Governor this morning and briefed him about law and order situation in the State.
They added that the Governor has asked the Home Secretary to hold urgent consultation with the Deputy Commissioners and responsible civil society representatives of five border districts and consult BSF and Army before preparing well considered proposals to provide relief to the people residing in the border villages, who have been put to great inconvenience by repeated instances of heavy mortar shelling from across the International Border (IB).
The Raj Bhavan handout, however, referred to repeated instances of heavy mortar shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) while as there has been no shelling at the LoC presently. It didn’t mention five border districts for which the Home Secretary has been asked to prepare the proposals. Presently, only two border districts of Samba and Kathua were affected by shelling while previously Jammu district was hit by shelling. Poonch and Rajouri are two other border districts in Jammu surrounded by the LoC.
The Raj Bhavan spokesman disclosed that the Government has also fixed a meeting early next week to discuss important issues with the Chief Secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, Home Secretary Suresh Kumar, Director General of Police K Rajendra, Divisional Commissioner Shant Manu and representatives of Army and BSF.
In the meeting, the Governor will review overall law and order situation apart from the situation prevailing on the borders due to frequent mortar shelling and firing from Pakistan, which has led to migration of a large number of people putting up in the border areas.
The Governor has also called another meeting to review relief distribution works among the flood victims in the State.
He has asked the Principal Secretary of Planning and Development Department BR Sharma to urgently advise him about action taken to utilize Rs 1000 crores worth special assistance received from the Centre for carrying out repair and reconstruction work of the State infrastructure, which was destroyed or damaged in worst ever floods in September last year.
In the meeting, the Governor would review latest status of relief distribution to the flood affected people in the entire State.
In another decision, the Governor has taken serious note of the complaints regarding shortage of kerosene oil supply in the Kashmir Valley.
He had directed Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Rohit Kansal to review the position regarding all essential commodities and the prices being charged and send detailed report to him by tomorrow.
“A similar direction has also been issued to Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Shant Manu,” sources said.
