JAMMU, Oct 7: Gorkha Nagar cremation ground situated at the bank of river Tawi in Jammu, suffered massive damage during heavy flood on August 26, but it has not been repaired and restored by the Jammu Municipal Corporation authorities till date.
Out of the total six pyre-platforms, only two could be made operational that too by the locals of the area who hired a JCB and cleared mud and sand from the site. The locals offered their services but till today the JMC or the District Administration Jammu didn’t bother to restore this cremation ground on war-footing.
The tin shed over the pyre platform and for the public at the site washed away in the flood on the fateful day of August 26, 2025 when main Jogi Gate Cremation ground also suffered huge damage. While Jogi Gate cremation ground was restored but till today, this cremation ground which is used by the people from Gorkha Nagar and Bahu Fort area for performing last rites of the dead people, still invites attention of the District Administration and the JMC authorities.
Dewan Chand, a resident of Bahu Fort area told the `Excelsior’ that after damage caused by flood, the concerned MLA Vikram Randhawa, Deputy Commissioner Jammu and even Municipal Commissioner, Jam mu Devash Yadav paid visit to the site and assured the locals early action but till today, not even single penny has been provided for the repair/ restoration of this cremation ground. What is the purpose of visit of VIPs if they have not to take up such works of great public importance, Dewan remarked.
Another local resident, Bahadur Lal said there is no shed as it has been washed away in the flood. During rain people are unable to cremate dead bodies. A few days ago, 3-4 dead bodies were brought to this site but there are only two pyre platforms. The other two were cremated in the open at the bank of river. He said MLAs and MPs have their own CDFs. At least they can provide immediate funds for such cause. Even Govt can utilize emergency funds for the restoration this cremation grounds. Lal said such type of insensitive government has never been seen by him in his life. He sought the intervention of Divisional Commissioner Jammu into the urgent matter.
