JAMMU, Sept 29: Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College, Jammu, celebrated World Heart Day by organising a seminar regarding women/ kids and CAD, under the theme ‘World Heart Day 2012’.
The seminar was attended by Heads of different departments and faculty members of GMC, Jammu, graduates and post graduates, nurses, technicians and paramedical staff of CCU Cath Lab.
Speaking in the seminar, Dr Sushil Sharma pointed out that born with thinner arteries and at genetic risk for cardiac diseases, Indians are worsening their risk for heart diseases with poor physical activity, a high-fat diet and by steadily shunning fruits and vegetables.
He also addressed certain myths associated with heart. He clarified the myth that cardiovascular disease mostly affects males, in fact, heart disease is the reason for one in three female deaths each year, he added. “It is important that you should be healthy enough so that you can extend your care to your family members”, Dr Sushil said.
Not only adults, but our children are also at increased risk of heart disease, he said, adding there is no age or gender bar to develop cardiovascular disease.
To best combat heart disease in India, there needs to be a comprehensive approach, which will require improvements in basic amenities, healthcare facilities and perhaps most importantly, education that will enable people to take responsibility for their own actions, Dr Sushil advised.
Dr Mohan Lal, Cardiologist and Dr Vijay Kohli, Cardiac Surgeon, Medanta Medicity, also spoke on the occasion.
