KATHUA, May 28: The Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Kathua while denying that the woman patient had died in hospital yesterday due to negligence of doctors said that despite best efforts of doctors they could not save the patient as her attendant did not cooperate with the doctors and provided a wrong information to them besides gave oral feeding to the patient who was put by doctors on Ryle’s tube.
In a statement issued today, Dr Surinder Atri, Principal GMCH, Kathua said that a 45 years old female admitted in our hospital on 24/05/23 with history of vomiting and unconsciousness. Her BP at admission was 180/100 and pupils of both eyes were constricted. So management started for high BP and CT Scan head was done which was normal.
However, patient’s condition deteriorated and was intubated and shifted to ICU. After about 2-3 hours of admission attendants told the doctor on duty that she may have consumed some poisonous substance. Patient was immediately started on treatment for Organophosphate poisoning based on her clinical signs and symptoms and managed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) until stabilized.
Afterward, the patient was extubated and shifted to a regular ward with a Ryle’s tube in place, which is a tube inserted through the nose to provide nutrition. However, after the attendants gave something orally to the patient, the patient suddenly collapsed. Initially attendant told about feeding orally but later refused to provide further information about what was given orally and even manhandled the doctor and damaged the hospital property.
Dr Atri further said patient was again intubated and shifted to ICU but unfortunately she expired.
Later it was also revealed by the attendants that patient had some psychiatric disorder and had stopped the medications for that.
This situation highlights the importance of transparent communication and cooperation between medical staff and attendants to ensure the patient’s well-being and safety, he said.
