Srinagar, Mar 1: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar is allegedly imposing a penalty of Rs 2 lakh on the students who leave the courses they are enrolled in mid-way.
The issue has come to the fore after a few students, pursuing their B.Sc in Anaesthesia at GMC Srinagar were selected for MBBS in other GMCs after qualifying NEET-2021 and were denied documents by the GMC authorities.
After their selection, the students went ahead to opt for MBBS, while leaving their paramedical courses midway, starting a process of retrieving the submitted documents from the GMC.
The students, after their selection in MBBS, left the course at GMC and visited the GMC to collect their documents submitted there. However, to their surprise, the students were asked to pay Rs 2 Lakh as a penalty for leaving the course midway.
The students have now been caught in a lurch as they are not able to submit the necessary documents at the institutions where they have been selected for MBBS as the same remains with the GMC Srinagar.
However, the officials said that the practice has been there for years, while the students allege that such a norm creates hurdles for them in going for higher studies.
Officials, however, said that the norms have been relaxed and now the students who leave their courses midway will have to pay a penalty of Rs 20000 while adding that the students sign an affidavit stating that they will pay the penalty if they do that.
