SRINAGAR, May 18: After six days of protests, non-gazetted employees at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla today suspended their “indefinite” strike following assurances from Baramulla MLA Javid Ahmad Beigh that their long-pending demands would be addressed on priority.
In a statement, the Non-Gazetted Employees Forum said the decision to suspend the agitation was taken after assurances regarding the framing of recruitment rules and resolution of acute staff shortages at the Medical College.
The Forum said the protest was aimed at highlighting employee concerns related to administrative delays, which, according to the employees, were affecting healthcare services at the institution.
The agitation was part of a broader demand by non-gazetted employees in five newly established government Medical Colleges – Baramulla, Anantnag, Doda, Rajouri and Kathua – seeking clear service and recruitment rules.
Employees had said the absence of such rules was affecting promotions, career progression and departmental functioning.
Earlier, Baramulla MLA Javid Ahmad Beigh had visited the protesting employees and assured them that their demands would be taken up with the concerned authorities for an early resolution.
