SRINAGAR, Aug 24: The ENT Department of the Government Medical College Baramulla today introduced the free Cochlear Surgery Programme under the ADIP scheme, which aims to provide complimentary treatment to children with hearing impairments.
Through this initiative, the Central Government offers cost-free cochlear implants valued at approximately Rs. 6 lakh each to these patients. Today, two surgeries were successfully performed with the support of a cochlear implant surgeon from AIIMS, New Delhi.
GMC Principal Rubi Reshi said that they have initiated a new surgical procedure specifically designed for children with congenital hearing impairments. “During the surgery, implants are placed in these children, and in conjunction with speech therapy, they can achieve proper hearing capabilities,” she said.
Rubi Reshi further emphasised the necessity of essential infrastructure and specialised experts for such surgeries. She said that the entire process, including the implantation, involves significant expenses. “We have made these implants available free of charge to patients under a specific scheme. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government, and experts from AIIMS in New Delhi have collaborated with us to conduct these surgeries. Their assistance will continue until our local doctors are adequately trained for this procedure,” she said.
