Srinagar, Sept 10: In an extraordinary medical feat in a peripheral healthcare setting, the doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla successfully removed a colossal ovarian cyst weighing nearly 15 kilograms from a woman who was already nine months into her pregnancy.
The complex procedure involved two surgeries: one for delivering the infant and another for immediately removing the massive cyst, as confirmed by hospital officials.
The patient, whose identity remains undisclosed, as per officials, was experiencing a “9-month amenorrhea pregnancy with a large Cystoadenoma, approximately 12 to 15 kg in size (measuring 40x35x30 cm).” The surgeries were performed with remarkable precision, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby and a healthy mother.
Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, the Medical Superintendent of GMC Baramulla, described this case as exceptionally rare. He commended the doctors’ efforts and emphasized that managing such complex cases at GMC Baramulla aligns with the hospital’s reduced referral policy.
“Such cases are usually referred to Lal Ded Hospital,” Dr. Masoodi explained. “However, managing this patient, including others, at GMC Baramulla is part of the hospital’s reduced referral policy, aided by the expertise of the available doctors.”
Regarding the nature of the cyst, Dr. Masoodi noted that masses removed from pregnant women are typically benign. However, further testing, such as histopathology, may be needed to confirm this in certain cases.
The challenging surgeries, lasting approximately one and a half hours, were led by the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Humera Noor, and Consultant Dr. Mudasir Ahmad, with valuable assistance from senior OT Assistant Abdul Hameed.
The doctors described the situation as highly critical, particularly given the unique circumstances in which they had to operate. “We knew that the stakes were high for both the mother and the unborn child, but we were determined to do everything in our power to ensure a positive outcome,” they stated.
Following the procedures, the medical team reported that the patient was now in stable condition, relieved of the enormous physical burden she had been carrying.
They also noted that the healthy baby, who survived the challenging environment created by the giant cyst, is thriving under the hospital’s care.
