JAMMU, Oct 16: New Call Telecom Ltd., one of the fastest growing residential telecom service providers in the UK with a growing presence in India announced that its Global CEO, Nigel Eastwood, will undertake a charity run on October 17 from Katra to the famous religious shrine of Vaishno Devi popular amongst devotees across religions and countries. He is raising money on the crowd funding website JustGiving,.com and hopes to raise at least Rs 5 lakh through the charity run. The proceeds of the charity run will be donated to The Society for Promotion of Tribal Welfare and Development (SPTWD), a registered NGO which provides free education for underprivileged people in India.
Tribal communities are some of the most disadvantaged people in India. In 2005, Scheduled Castes and Tribes accounted for 80 per cent of the poor rural population. Suffering from high levels of discrimination, they experience some of the worst health outcomes in the country as well as the highest levels of incarceration. New Delhi-based SPTWD, founded in 2003, works with Tribal communities in Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Delhi. They equip individuals, families and communities with the skills they need to improve their own lives, running community-based educational activities that help people understand healthcare and sanitation, personal finance and economic empowerment, sustainable development and how to look after the environment. They also provide advocacy services and lobby on behalf of tribal groups.
Nigel Eastwood, CEO of New Call Telecom, said: “I’m honoured to be able to help SPTWD. It is an outstanding organisation, staffed by wonderful people who are totally committed to supporting hundreds of families, children and young people. I’ve been visiting India regularly for more than 10 years and I’ve seen for myself the incredible work they do. I’m full of admiration for them and the outstanding results they achieved over the years. I just hope I can raise as much money as possible so that they can reach even more disadvantaged communities.”
