Sir,
My appreciation for the recent inauguration of the ‘GI Mahotsav’ in Jammu and Kashmir, a commendable effort led by the Agriculture Production Department to promote GI-tagged products. Geographic Indication (GI) tags hold immense potential for safeguarding and elevating products originating from specific regions.
In today’s digitally connected world, the importance of showcasing the uniqueness and authenticity of our products cannot be overstated. Western nations have excelled in protecting their intellectual property through GI tags, and India must catch up. While India boasts 504 GI tags, there is still untapped potential waiting to be explored.
To fully realize this potential, various Governmental Departments must collaborate, supporting everything from raw material procurement to packaging techniques. Additionally, establishing a retail outlet for GI-tagged products in Jammu Haat, a strategically positioned area with a high tourist influx, could significantly boost the promotion of these valuable products. Let’s work together to harness the power of GI tags, bolstering India’s position on the global stage and preserving our rich heritage.
