GI certification with geographical origin of the world famous Kashmiri saffron was in the pipeline for quite some time and it is a moment of lot of satisfaction for the saffron growers in Kashmir to have the produce, now, bearing a Government registration. This will help the growers to access markets, national and global, for its sale thus getting benefitted in a major way. A first major step to put the Kashmiri saffron on world map with authentication, as the Lieutenant Governor termed it, would acquire more prominence and ensure better remunerative prices to the growers.
Confronted with host of problems, mainly stiff competition from other countries in the international market, this certification of GI registration would increasingly take care of that problem. As expected, come the start of the State of Art Spice Park next month, such measures were going to restore the unique pristine glory to Kashmiri saffron, still known for its unparalleled qualities of aroma, culinary and medicinal values.
