JAMMU, May 13: In the first initiative of its kind, the two Gandhian societies–Gandhi Global Family (GGF), J&K and Gandhi Peace Foundation (GPF) Jammu Chapter have joined hands in collaboration with United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) New Delhi, to promote UN Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) as mentioned in Agenda-2030 which was signed by United Nations member States in September 2015.
Both the Gandhian societies are globally recognised organisations. GGF is United Nations accredited NGO, while GPF is a renowned NGO having its existence over fifty years.
A meeting was held between Padamshree S P Varma, President GGF, J&K and Dr Seema Rohmetra, Coordinator GPF Jammu in presence of the office bearers and volunteers of the two societies.
In the meeting it was decided to identify and recognised 17 schools from Jammu city on the basis of efficiency, and commitment to take the goals forward in the right perspectives and one school will be identified as a nodal coordinating agency. Further it was stressed upon the need for the schools to voluntarily come forward and be a part of this initiative.
The agreed seventeen goals with 169 targets are poised to take us to “the future we want”. The main purpose to have these goals in the agenda is to eradicate poverty, fight inequality, and injustice, and combat climate change by 2030.
The SDGs have been based on five core principles–the five Ps–people, planet, partnership, prosperity and peace. These five principles set the foundations for the new global agenda, encompassing all the areas of development- social, environmental, economic and cultural.
