Geothermal energy sources in Ladakh

Sir,
Due to sub zero temperatures  prevailing during winter months, the hydroelectric power projects almost cease to produce electricity during winters in Ladakh since the water resources start freezing with the onset of winter. However, the electricity starved Ladakh has got a tremendous potential in Geothermal energy. Nature has enriched this geographically isolated and mountainous region with a  number of hot springs in Changthang and Nubra regions of Leh Ladakh. According to a survey by a German based NGO a few years ago, the hot springs  of Chumathang and Puga valley in the Changthang area alone  have the capability of producing 240 Mega Watts (MW) of electricity . The state Govt. should pay attention towards  exploiting  these geothermal sources of energy for the benefit of people. In case the energy  of these hot springs is being harnessed with geothermal technology, Ladakh region will get surplus power supply throughout the year and in this way, a major grievance of the inhabitants of this region can be redressed. The Puga Valley which falls in the nomadic belt of Changthang region of district Leh, is also enriched with Sulphur reserves. A non-operational Sulphur extraction plant exists in the region but it needs to be made functional once again.
