Gender budgeting imperative for economic growth: DDC

SAMBA, Feb 16: A meeting of District /Sectoral officers to review the impact of workshop organized on gender budgeting was held today at Samba under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Mubarak Singh.
The DDC while speaking on the occasion strongly advocated  gender budgeting at all levels, including Panchayats level and said that women, constitute 48% of India’s population, but they lag behind men on many social indicators like health, education, economic opportunities, etc and  said that in  India sex ratio according to the 2011 Census data is 940 and the world figures are 984 (2011), and further said that participation of women folk in the development process is  imperative for achieving the desirable economic growth.
Hafiza Muzaffar, the Executive Director State Rehabilitation Council for militancy  affected people, Department of Social Welfare also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of gender budgeting. She said that the main aim of gender budgeting is to increase women participation in economic decision-making and budgetary processes, providing a critical tool for monitoring spending. Even though commitments to gender equality might be present in the budget, the actual expenditure might still not promote equality between women and men.
Jyotika Banerjee, the resource person while speaking on the occasion said that there are many schemes which have been specially designed to extend moral, financial and technological support to women to enable them  to live a respectable  life.
