SRINAGAR, June 1: Army chief General Bipin Rawat today arrived in Srinagar, along with top Army Commanders of the country including command chiefs, for three day meeting being held here at Badamibagh Cantonment to review Army’s preparedness.
These Commanders including the Army chief arrived here this morning and headed for Badamibagh Cantonment where three daylong meeting to discuss preparedness of the Army and other aspects are being deliberated upon since this morning.
The meeting is normally held in the Army headquarters in New Delhi but has been held here, sources said, to send a strong signal to Pakistan. The meeting discussed the general issues of the Army besides its preparedness.
The meeting in Srinagar comes at a time when the Line of Control (LoC) is hot and the troops along the LoC and International Border are on high alert after tension along the borders. After Pakistani troops Border Action Team strikes against Army along the LoC, Indian troops have also gone for counter-offensive.
The focus of the meeting is also the situation in Jammu and Kashmir where militancy has been on rise with over 250 militants operating in Kashmir especially in South. The conduct of operations in South has become difficult due to frequent protests and stone throwing at armed forces during the anti-militancy operations.
The infiltration of militants from across the border into Jammu and Kashmir is also being deliberated upon besides the effective counter-infiltration measures to be taken are being discussed.
Army says around 250 militants are waiting on the launch pads in PoK along the LoC. They are being pushed across the LoC into Kashmir but Army is alert on the borders and have foiled several such attempts in last one month killing 19 of them. However, as per the official figures, 19 militants managed to infiltrate into Kashmir this year.
The meeting will last for three days and on Saturday, these Commanders including Chief of Army Staff will return soon after the meeting is over.
