JAMMU, Dec 19: BJP Spokesperson and Convener International Affairs, Gaurav Gupta today called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and submitted a detailed memorandum, proposing a future-oriented development roadmap for the Jammu region with a focus on semiconductor manufacturing, IT sector expansion and eco-tourism development.
Gupta urged the LG-led UT administration to pursue the establishment of a semiconductor fabrication unit (chip fab) in Jammu under the Government of India’s India Semiconductor Mission.
He apprised that under the Government of India’s India Semiconductor Mission, several semiconductor fabrication and allied projects have recently been approved and planned across the country.
He specifically pointed to recent national developments in the semiconductor sector – including the Centre’s approval of a Rs 4,500-crore modernisation and expansion plan for the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali near Chandigarh, part of the India Semiconductor Mission to boost domestic fabrication and R&D capacity and said that while these moves are welcome, Jammu & Kashmir must also be given its due share in the semiconductor ecosystem. Underlining the need for equitable growth, Gupta urged the Lieutenant Governor to press the Union Government to ensure J&K figures in future semiconductor investment plans.
The BJP spokesperson also stressed the need for rapid expansion of the IT and technology sector in Jammu. He proposed inviting major Indian and global IT companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, IBM and others to establish IT parks, innovation hubs, R&D centres and corporate offices.
Another key proposal in the memorandum relates to eco-tourism development in the Sudhmahadev-Mantalai belt. Gupta suggested developing the region on the lines of Jim Corbett National Park, with eco-friendly infrastructure, trekking routes, nature trails and community-based tourism models.
