Sir,
This has reference to the writeup’Garbage Collection in villages’ (DE, Dec 22, 2016).The writer has shared valuable information regarding the need and the facilities available for scientific management of solid liquid waste in rural areas under the national flagship programme’ Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan Grameen’.There is no doubt that a lot of solid and liquid waste is generated in villages everyday but our policies and programmes related to the effective solid liquid waste management are generally limited to the urban areas only.Though most of this waste generated in villages is biodegradable, there are items such as polythene bags, plastic wrappers, steel blades etc.which are non biodegradable and need safe disposal. Thus, there is urgent need to cover the rural areas with regard to solid liquid waste management to make them clean and garbage free. For this purpose, it is imperative that the awareness programmes related to effective and scientific management of solid liquid waste management are organised at Panchayat level and the local community is motivated to come forward to avail of various facilities including financial assistance to implement SBM Grameen. In this way,the waste can be collected from door to door, segregated into biodegradable and non biodegradable and finally scientifically treated by technologies such as vermicomposting, biogasplants.Every household must be motivated to seggregate the waste into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable in different bins. The organic solid waste can be reused as manure for agricultural activities. In this way, organic farming can also be promoted in villages. The government, especially the Rural Development Department and NGOs working for SBM and environment need to come forward to start the scientific management of waste in villages to make them clean, green and garbage free so that the villagers may live in hygienic and clean atmosphere and environmental degradation is checked. The writer deserves appreciation for bringing the useful information to the people through this writeup.
Yours etc…
