Garbage dumps outside Handwara schools

SRINAGAR, Apr 13:  The entrances to the Boys’ and Girls’ Higher Secondary Schools in Handwara have turned into a garbage dumping site, creating serious problems for students and local residents.
Students and people living nearby said that even after many complaints, nothing has been done. “Waste keeps piling up at the school gates, causing a foul smell, dirty surroundings, and difficulty for students entering and leaving the schools. Many have questioned how such an important place, used by hundreds of students every day, has been neglected”.

Residents have expressed anger over the situation. One local said it was “unfortunate” that garbage had been allowed to collect between two major schools, discouraging students from attending classes.
“We have an elected MLA here but he has not done anything so far. We hope he will step in, address the situation and ensure that this waste is cleared and moved to a proper waste dumping site where it can be treated scientifically without harming the environment,” a resident said.
Students said they suffer the most, as they have to pass through the garbage daily. They also report stray dogs near the waste and said the bad smell often reaches their classrooms. “When we come in the morning, there are stray dogs and a foul smell that enters our classrooms. Students fall sick,” a student said.
Residents and students have urged the authorities to act quickly, remove the garbage, and ensure proper waste management so the problem does not continue.
