JAMMU, Dec 3: Minister for Industries and Commerce Chander Parkash Ganga today called for exploring new avenues and employing modern marketing techniques for promotion of J&K’s authentic and unique handicraft and handloom products.
Speaking at a function after inaugurating “Special Handloom Exhibition-2016” at Kala Kendra here, the Minister said such events provide a platform to the artisans and weavers of the State to exhibit and market their products.
The exhibition is being organized by J&K State Handloom Development Corporation and sponsored by Development Commissioner Handlooms, Union Ministry of Textiles. The exhibition showcases products of finest quality under the “India Handloom” brand, drawn from some of the exotic locations of J&K. The products range from silk, classic Pashmina shawls, world famous Kani shawls, exotic embroidered shawls, Basohli Pashmina shawls, and many other products produced by the weavers, artisans, and craftsmen.
Ganga while highlighting the benefits of India Handloom Brand which is an initiative of the Union Ministry of Textiles for branding of high quality handloom products, said the brand would help the weavers and other artisans to earn more for their socio-economic development.
He said handloom and handicrafts are the dependable cottage industries which provide livelihood to a large chunk of population in the State. He asked the officers of Handloom and Handicrafts Departments to facilitate the weavers and artisans for hassle free loan facility from the banking institutions.
Nearly 50 societies, sponsored by Director Handloom Development Department have been provided stalls for display and sale of their products.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Managing Director JKHDC Showkat A Zargar highlighted the achievements made under different developmental schemes which are being implemented for welfare of handloom weavers, artisans of the State.
