JAMMU, June 4: Gandhi Global Family J&K along with Gandhi Peace Foundation, Jammu Chapter, in collaboration with the State Forest Department,   organized an Environment Sensitization Program at Ranbir High School, Jammu, under the aegis of UNIC, New Delhi.
Roshan Jaggi, Chief Forest Conservator, who was chief guest on the occasion, stressed upon the relevance of environment day and need for self introspection so as to understand the causes that have contributed to environmental degradation. He also talked about the way in which changed life styles and the associated developments and modernization trends have disturbed the ecosystems and the food chains.
He stressed upon the environmental challenges facing the present world like global warming and ozone depletion along with the green house effects. He also told the students about the ways in which they can contribute towards creating an environment friendly society.
S P Varma, president of Gandhi Global Family, J&K, focused upon the need for implementation of the Gandhian philosophy of ‘peaceful existence’  and ‘ non violence ‘ in dealing with environmental issues. He further expressed the desire of partnerships between different organizations, civil society and other age civvies in creating the awareness and sensitization regarding such an important issue.
Dr Seema Rohmetra, coordinator Gandhi Peace Foundation, Jammu Chapter, in her address, stressed that man being the highest evolutionary form has a responsibility to save planet earth. “Gandhian philosophy of non-violence is one of the means to provide solution to the contemporary environmental problems. Also his concept of ‘limitation of wants’ is highly relevant today and can go a long way in conserving the nature,” she said.
Besides,  Dr Seema Rohmetra  also focused upon the concept of ‘rights and duties’ to  provide solution to the current environmental problems, saying that if we have a right to enjoy clean air we have a duty to keep that air clean, similarly if we have a right to clean water and land , we have a duty to protect the same.
