SRINAGAR, Mar 15: The illegal dumping of garbage along the banks of the Sind River near the Manigam area in Ganderbal district has sparked grave concern among residents, who fear its detrimental effects on the water body.
The residents said the heaps of waste not only reflect poor solid waste management practices but also pose significant health and environmental risks. “Despite the presence of a segregation shed, officials continue to disregard proper disposal methods,” a resident said.
Expressing dismay, another resident said: “It is wrong that people are being charged Rs 100 for garbage collection only to have it improperly disposed off on the river banks.”
In response to the outcry, Block Development Officer Amarjeet Singh assured prompt action. “We have already issued strict directives against dumping waste along the Sind banks. Offenders will be held accountable, and the trash will be promptly cleared,” he said. He emphasised the implementation of segregation sheds and modern waste processing machinery to ensure proper management of waste in the area.
