JAMMU, May 13: The mining mafia people today attacked police and Geology and Mining Department team members with stones, damaged a police vehicle during broad day light operation in river Tawi near Bhagwati Nagar bridge today.
Reports said that as reported by ‘Excelsior’ a few days ago about broad day light illegal mining in river Tawi despite High Court ban near 4th bridge, today a joint team of G&M Department and police led by DMO Jammu, launched operation to crack down on the mafia. At least 10 tractor trolleys were engaged in illegal mining/ loading sand in the river bed about 300 mts above the 4th Tawi bridge. A JCB was also engaged while some of the trolleys were being loaded manually by the labourers.
On seeing the team of G&M officials and police, the people at the site started pelting stones on the policemen and other officials. However, no one was injured in the attack but the police vehicle was damaged. Some officials of G&M escaped for their lives. Some more people joined the attackers from the nearby locality. After stoning, the attackers escaped. They left behind their vehicles. The police and G&M officials seized eight tractor trolleys and one JCB while two Tractor trolleys were trapped in the sand on the river bed.
A senior official said that a case has been registered in this connection. He said there is complete ban on the mining activity in this part of the river Tawi. No one will be allowed to carry out mining activity and that too, near these two vital bridges.
