Srinagar, Feb 27: The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) today issued avalanche warning for hills in North Kashmir after upper reaches received fresh snowfall and plains were lashed by rains.
An official of the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority in a statement issued a Medium danger avalanche warning, on the basis of information provided by SASE, for higher reaches of Nowgam and Kaiyan areas of North Kashmir. “People living in these snow bound areas have been advised to take precautions”, says the warning.
Reports reaching here from Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Kupwara and other areas said that upper reaches experienced light snowfall today. In Srinagar and other areas of Kashmir valley it was raining intermittently since morning and chilly winds were blowing across.
Snowfall was also reported from Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop areas of National Highway but it was open for one-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu.
The Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Muneer Ahmad Khan, told Excelsior that despite snowfall 5000 vehicles crossed Banihal Tunnel towards Jammu since morning. He said that majority of these vehicles crossed Battery Chesma where slides blocked the traffic intermittently since last week.
The IGP said that traffic will be allowed to ply Jammu to Srinagar tomorrow.
