Former MP JTN Leads World Environment Day Plantation Drive at Trans-Himalayan Herbal Garden, Phey

Leh, June 5, 2026; On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), Leh organized a plantation drive and cleanliness campaign at the Trans-Himalayan Herbal Garden, Phey, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation, ecological sustainability, and public awareness.

 

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, former Member of Parliament from Ladakh, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Marking the significance of the day, Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, accompanied by Dr. Padma Gyurmet, the Director of NISR, planted an apple sapling in the herbal garden as a symbolic gesture of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility towards safeguarding nature for future generations.

 

Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal emphasized the importance of preserving Ladakh’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem and encouraged citizens, particularly the youth, to actively participate in environmental protection initiatives. He lauded the efforts of the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa in promoting ecological awareness while preserving the region’s invaluable medicinal plant heritage.

 

Following the inauguration, Shri Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was taken on a guided tour of the Trans-Himalayan Herbal Garden, where he was briefed on the conservation, cultivation, and research activities being undertaken for a wide variety of medicinal and aromatic plant species indigenous to the Himalayan region. He appreciated the Institute’s dedicated efforts in preserving traditional knowledge systems and promoting the sustainable utilization of Ladakh’s rich herbal resources.

 

Faculty members, staff, scholars, and students of NISR enthusiastically participated in the plantation and cleanliness drives. The participants planted saplings and carried out cleanliness activities within and around the garden premises, demonstrating their collective commitment to a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.

 

The programme concluded with a renewed pledge to strengthen environmental consciousness and foster sustainable practices, highlighting the importance of collective action in building a greener and more resilient future for Ladakh and the nation.
