NEW DELHI, Aug 25: Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court B A Khan has been elected president of India chapter of SAARC Law, an apex body which promotes cooperation among the legal fraternity of the eight-member regional grouping.
Others elected to SAARC Law India are two vice presidents — Ranbir Singh, Vice Chancellor of National Law School, Delhi and senior Supreme Court advocate Rakesh Munjal. Priya Hingorani was elected as secretary of the newly elected body which will have a two-year term.
Justice Khan succeeds former Supreme Court judge Umesh Banerjee who died recently.
South Asian Association For Regional Co-operation in Law, (SAARC Law), is an association of the legal communities of the SAARC countries comprising judges, lawyers, academicians, law teachers, public officers and a host of other law-related persons.
“India chapter of SAARC Law has been holding conferences and seminar on burning legal issues. We have been promoting cooperation and exchange of ideas with various countries of the grouping,” Khan said.
He said the India chapter of the organization has been having regular exchange of ideas with legal community of Pakistan and both sides have been drawing from each other’s experiences.
All the SAARC countries have their own SAARC chapter. The apex body is currently headed by Bhutan Chief Justice Sonam Tobgye. The India chapter of SAARC Law was formed in October 1991.
Till date, the SAARC Law International has held 12 conferences in different countries of the regional bloc. The next conference is scheduled to be held in Nepal next year. (PTI)
