Food wastage a global problem

Sir,
This refers to article “Food wastage a global problem” by Bisma ashraf zargar (DE 5.12.2017). The food wastage is not only creating food crises across the developing countries but the food waste is the main source of garbage accumulation in towns and cities. The waste generated in cities and towns consists 70 to 80  percent Bio Degradable waste which is mostly food waste. If we reduce food waste , we will be reducing the waste. Irony is that we do not even know how to treat the food waste and that is the reason it emits foul smell once it is mixed with plastic / polythene waste and is dumped by municipal authorities at un scientific landfill sites.
Achan landfill site in Srinagar and Bhagwati Nagar landfill site in Jammu are two such examples. One might have noticed pungent smell coming out from these so called landfills, the reason is dumping of food waste. It is so sad that even  fruit / vegetable waste which could have been processed in the fruit and vegetable  markets is also dumped un-scientifically by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) field workers. It seems the municipal officials are also not aware of different kinds of waste. I would suggest people to start compositing food waste inside the premises of houses and make sure food is not wasted. Wastage of food is not only against the ethics but all the religions also forbid us from wasting food.
Yours etc….
Dr Fozia Kouser
