Fodder scam case; Lalu gets bail

NEW DELHI : In a major relief for Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Supreme Court today  granted him bail in the Fodder Scam Case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi granted him bail after hearing his counsel who submitted before the court that 37 accused have already been granted bail in the case.
Lalu was sentenced to five years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25 lakh in the case.
Lalu was at present lodged at Ranchi jail in Jharkhand.
Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and JD(U) MP Jagdish Prasad Sharma were also convicted and sentenced in the case.
Lalu was facing allegations of unauthorised withdrawal of Rs 37 crore during his tenure as Bihar Chief Minister in 1990.
Jharkhand High Court is also hearing a petition against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, JD(U) MP Shivanand Tiwari  and former MP Lalan Singh facing allegations of receiving money in fodder scam case.
The main accused S B Sinha, who has since died, has in his confessional statement alleged that Rs 1 crore was paid to Nitish Kumar and Rs 40 lakh to Shivanand Tiwari and a similar amount was also paid to Lalan Singh.
The CBI, however, has submitted in the High Court that there was no evidence against the three JD(U)leaders including Nitish Kumar. (AGENCIES)
