Focus on quality education: Governor

JAMMU, Dec 10: It is very important to spread facilities for higher education but equally important to ensuring that the education imparted is of an acceptable quality. This was stated by N.N.Vohra, Governor during the foundation laying ceremony of the Ramnagar University Campus at Dalsar in tehsil Ramnagar of district Udhampur.
Governor also stressed the need for ensuring that the subjects to be taught at the off-site of the universities are relevant to the area and have the potential of opening up new opportunities for the all round development of the area and also help in the preservation of its culture.
Observing that these off-site campuses were conceived to extend facilities of higher education to remote and far off areas, the Governor said that all efforts should be made for receiving a much larger enrolment of the locals in these campuses.
Emphasizing the importance of frequent interactions and discussions among the students and teachers, Governor said that all necessary efforts should be made towards strengthening tolerance and understanding contrary points of view, as this would lead to the balanced development of the students.
Governor observed that the teaching faculty of these campuses of the universities should be also concerned in dealing with the deficiencies among the faculties of the nearby colleges and higher secondary schools.
Prof M.P.S Isher, Vice chancellor Jammu University emphasized the need of strengthening the infrastructure at the campus by creating more facilities for sports activities, provision of internet, and strengthening of staff position.He said that apart from university campuses at Udhampur and Kathua all other campuses have teaching faculty on ad hoc basis. He further added that for all the six campuses about 30 faculty positions have been sanctioned and very soon permanent faculty would be introduced in phased manner.
MLA Ramnagar Harshdev Singh described this step as a milestone in enhancing the educational milieu of this remote area .He demanded introduction of at least three more new subjects apart from the ongoing curriculum of  Masters in Computer Sciences and Masters in Sociology in the Ramnagar University campus.
Earlier, after the foundation laying ceremony of the Ramnagar university campus, Governor was briefed about the lay out plan of the university campus and told that the campus is being constructed in 238 kanal of land for which Rs 10.50 crore have been approved by the UGC for infrastructure development and till date 50% of the grant has been released by the UGC and expenditure incurred is Rs.2.50 crore. The proposed construction at the site includes Academic Block, Girls hostel and Boys hostel.
Governor directed the university authorities to make the campus environment friendly by incorporating solar energy and rain water conservation in the building plan of the entire campus. He enquired whether the building has been planned as per the seismic zone specifications and also had a detailed discussion on the construction material being used in all the three blocks.
On the occasion, Professor Rajni Kant; Director `Ramnagar University campus gave technical details of the construction being carried out in the campus and curricular and co curricular activities going on in the campus.

Principal Secretary to Governor, Naveen K. Choudhary, DIG Udhampur Reasi range Garib Dass, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Yasha Mudgal, SP Udhampur Anil Magotra besides others were present on the occasion.
