JAMMU, Mar 28: Flouting norms of Pollution Control Board, Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) which is responsible for looking after sewage and Drainage work within Jammu Municipal limits, is discharging sewage water of several colonies of Bakshi Nagar area in Ranbir canal, which is the lifeline of Jammu.
Sources told Excelsior that sewage water of several colonies on upper side of IIIM (Regional Research Laboratory) Jammu are being discharged for last about several decades in a pond lying in the premises of IIIM and about 10-years back, the JMC had established a pumping station there to pump out this sewage water in a big ‘nallah’.
However, the UEED is discharging this sewage water directly into the canal near IIIM main entrance and now when there is no water being released into the canal from Chenab, this sewage water is giving foul smell due to which even breathing has become difficult for the people living in surroundings areas.
When contacted, Executive Engineer, UEED, Ashwani Seth said that due to rains, one of the valves of the pumping system was damaged yesterday due to which the sewagewater went into Ranbir Canal through an old outlet but as soon as we came to know, we stopped the water by closing that outlet.
He denied that the sewage water is deliberately being discharged into the canal. “Not at all, we are discharging the sewage water into the nallah. It just happened due to excessive rainfall occurred on yesterday. But we have checked that,” he asserted.
