JAMMU, Nov 19: J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Ahmed Mir said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi shall always be remembered as `Iron Lady’ of India for her qualities of leadership and bold decisions in the interests of the nation and sacrifice of her life for the unity and integrity of the country.

Addressing an impressive function at party headquarters here today to pay rich tributes to the former Prime Minister of India, on her 102nd Birth Anniversary, Mir said that Indira Gandhi was one of the strongest leaders of the world so far and will always go down in the history of the world as the iron lady of India. She led the country to new heights in every sphere and enhanced the image of the country world wide .
India Gandhi always took revolutionary steps keeping in view the poor and down trodden sections of the society and was a source of empowerment for women in the country. She nationalized the private banks, abolished privy purses and launched 20 point programme for the welfare and poverty alleviation programme for the poor. He also recalled the special bond of Nehru-Gandhi family for Jammu and Kashmir.
He also paid rich tributes to Rani Laxmi Bai Jhansi who led the struggle against the British invasion and fought for the freedom of the nation.
Referring to the current political developments, he regretted that a historical state has been disbanded and converted into UTs on this day which is very unfortunate that a full fledged state has been reduced and downgraded to UT. The people have been deprived of their powers and rights in an arbitrary and undemocratic manner. The party shall strive for seeking the full fledged status of the state and other constitutional safeguards for the protection of the rights of the people and youth of the state, Mir added.
He referred to the great economic slowdown in the country due to the flawed economic policies of the BJP Govt as a result the Congress party has held peaceful programmes at different district headquarters in Jammu region today.
Floral tributes were also paid by senior party leaders Raman Bhalla, Ravinder Sharma, Kanta Bhan, Rajnish Sharma, Th Balwan Singh, Manmohan Singh, Vikram Malhotra, Balbir Singh, Indu Pawar, Udhey Chib, Rajesh Sadotra, Raqiq Choudhary, Suresh Dogra, Praveen Sarwar Khan, KL Gupta, Neeraj Gupta, HS Mehta, Iqbal Dar, Sanjeev Panda, Kapil Singh, Dwarka Choudhary, Gourav Chopra, Sobat Ali, Rajveer Singh, Rajinder Singh, Dr Ramakant Khajuria, BB Gupta, Madan Lal Malagar, PS Chouhan and others.
District Congress Committee Udhampur led by Krishan Chander Bhagat besides other district units also paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi.
Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Fighter’s Association (JKFFA) on Tuesday organised a function to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Rani Lakshmi Bai, Jhansi Ki Rani and the Iron Lady and former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
The function was held at Dogra Shaurya Sthal Ambphalla which was organised by Ved Gandotra, JKFFA chairman and Rajiv Mahajan, vice chairman. Floral tributes were paid to the great ladies with showers of the petals by all the members present on the occasion. The chief guest Gourav Chopra and the member highlighted the deeds of the Rani Lakshmibai who started the first freedom struggle against the British Rule. They also highlighted the life history of Indira Gandhi, who also proved herself in the war with Pakistan in 1971 and was the creator of Bangladesh.
Chief patron of NPP, Prof Bhim Singh on the occasion of Indira Gandhi’s 102nd birth anniversary described her as a highly visionary leader at international platform who had demonstrated courage and wisdom in her victory as well as in her defeat. He recollected his meetings, interactions, confrontations & political participation in meetings with Gandhi before emergency, during emergency and after her defeat in 1977.
