Flood-hit J&K: SC notice to EC on Model Code of Conduct

NEW DELHI :  The Supreme Court today decided to  consider a petition seeking directions to the Election Commission not to enforce the Model Code of Conduct in flood-hit Jammu and  Kashmir,on the grounds that it will hamper the relief and  rehabilitation work.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu, issued notice to EC on an oral request of lawyer Bhim Singh seeking to defer the imposition of MCC in the state.
The apex court has sought the response of the EC within a week.
Assembly elections in the state are due to be held in five phases in November-December.
Unprecedented floods caused massive damage to life and property in the state and a large number of people were rendered homeless.
